As part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, PROTON recently teamed up with local environmental non-governmental organisation (NGO) MY Clean Beach to tackle pressing environmental issues at Pantai Batu Laut, a beach located at Tanjong Sepat along the shores of the Straits of Malacca and situated less than two hours' drive from Kuala Lumpur.
The beach-cleaning activity, involving 42 volunteers from PROTON management, Kelab Proton Edar members and the NGO, focused on two key areas of the beach: the mangrove region and the local visitor area. The team successfully removed 338.5 kilograms of waste, which included 263.95 kilograms of general waste, 38 kilograms of large items, 3.5 kilograms of tin/metal, 19.5 kilograms of plastic, 14 kilograms of glass, and 148 cigarette butts. In addition, 46 plastic straws were collected and removed from the area, contributing to the restoration of the beach’s natural beauty.
Pantai Batu Laut, which is known for its lush mangrove swamps and clear waters will benefit significantly from the removal of waste as the efforts contribute to a healthier ecosystem and a cleaner environment. The event aimed to not only improve the beach's condition but also to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our beaches clean and the role that mangroves and coastal ecosystems play in environmental conservation.
The collaboration between PROTON and MY Clean Beach underscores the importance of environmental responsibility for corporations. Through this initiative, PROTON continues to engage its employees in meaningful CSR activities, fostering teamwork and camaraderie while promoting environmental awareness. The event also served as a platform to raise awareness on proper waste disposal and the pressing issues of plastic pollution.
With a tagline of “My beach is local, and I own it. It’s part of me and my country,” MY Clean Beach is a passionate organisation dedicated to protecting marine life and addressing the growing issue of plastic pollution. To date, the NGO has already removed 16,817.8 kilograms of waste, engaged 3,677 volunteers, and planted 485 trees in its efforts to protect the environment.
“By removing waste from Pantai Batu Laut, PROTON has helped contribute to healthier ecosystems and also foster a sense of unity among our employees while also raising awareness about the vital importance of environmental protection and responsible waste management. As we grow our product line to include more hybrid and EV models, it is imperative that our operations are also more environmentally friendly and CSR activities such as this are a great way to get the ball rolling” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.
